Juneteenth, short for June 19th, celebrates the abolition of slavery, commemorating the delayed anniversary in which slaves in Texas were informed of their freedom almost two years after their Emancipation Proclamation.
Though widely celebrated among many African Americans as “Independence Day”, Juneteenth’s Texas roots give it a strong following among southern states. Celebrations range from day to week-long events including family and community gatherings that focus on reflection, achievement and goals for the future.
